Rodney King and Civil Rights

The brutal beating of Rodney King by police violated our constitutional rights as provided for in the civil rights bill. The police violated the fourth and fourteenth amendments provisions by executing unreasonable search and seizure on Rodney King. These amendments dictate for police to have a search and seizure warrant during investigations and arresting of crime suspects. The police are bound to present the search and seizure warrant to the suspect before executing their search, seizure andor arrest, an element which was missing in the case of Rodney King.

The offices violated Rodney Kings constitutional right by using unreasonable force against him during the arrest. Though Rodney King reportedly declined requests by the police to come out of the car, the injuries sustaining from the brutal beating proved unreasonable. American civil rights guarantee citizens the right to be free from harm when under official custody, a right which was violated by the police officers in the case of Rodney King. The act by the police can also be cited as a violation of American hate crime laws and the US code, which prohibits anybody from depriving another person of there constitutional rights.

The provisions of our civil right laws must be applied to all Americans regardless of their social and ethnic status. To realize this, there is much need to oversee the respect for the law prohibiting unreasonable search by law enforcement. Another important action plan is the provisions of 18 U.S.C. 242, which prohibits any one from depriving another of their constitutional. Lastly, despite the existence of numerous hate crime laws, their effectiveness in ensuring equitable just to all remains questionable. This calls for the government to more effectively enforce such laws to mitigate violation of civil rights. The law enforcers should also face the law for their unlawful acts such as police brutality case of Rodney King.
