COLONIAL SPORT IN AMERICA

During the seventeenth century there were increased scrutiny of various sporting activities and the biggest question was whether they could be allowed or not. Some on one hand argued that through the control of the legalized games by the government such questions would never arise. Different individuals had different views and some suggested that games were as a result of idleness while others argued that it was a form of luxury.

In this essay my main thesis is that the type of individual sporting activity and the negative criticism on recreation led to the stigmatization and determination of an individuals personality, and way of life.

Recreation is part of the extra curricular activity which human bodies require to live healthy and comfortable life. Most of the high profile people in the society during this period took part in the recreation activities. This provision of recreation imposed a law thus for one to have been considered influential in the political arena, he or she had to advocate for some recreation activities. All those who were against this were elbowed out of the political social class. This is why the Mathers were able to rise high and become icons in the society of the New England Puritans.

An individuals position in a play and the type of game one plays sometimes depicts their religious beliefs. In that argument, the Pennsylvania officials categorized different games and termed them illegal and gave disciplinary penalty for the victims that would indulge or get involved with the games that had been categorized as evil. They argued that since sports were meant for fun and enjoyment, then if a certain sport would lead into chaos and riots, then that could not be termed as a sport.

Intelligence is a worth treasure that drives one up the economy ladder. Through the exercise of the intellectual recreation by the scholars this draws a major division between them and the others in the society. Those who were against the intellectual recreation that included music and poetry were stigmatized in the lower social economic class as with the educated Puritans.

Different religion consisted of different evaluation of the issues that their followers could engage in.  They argued that the level of indulgence in pleasure and recreation determined ones faith whereas others condoned sports and games regarding them as a source of immorality and vice due to the excessive excitement. The Anglicans in this case condoned sporting whereas the Quakers were against sporting.

The stability of the social economical and political diagnosis can depict the social class of an individual. With the government declining on the laws opposing sporting, those who were against it and were advocating for the passing of these laws were forced to return to the villages where the living standards were below average. In addition to the construction of recreation pursuits in Philadelphia, they raised the social class for the dwellers who were actively involved in sports. Those who immigrated to the recreation areas lived a rich modernized life whereas those against the recreation became even poorer. Horse racing was related with immorality and drunkenness.

The extent of commercial development can symbolize the economic stability of an individual. Those who advocated for the recreation involved themselves in the setting up of recreation sites for commercial purposes and hence stabilized into the high economic class. They were also involved in oversee commerce and as a result increased the gap between the rich and the poor.

The individual stand towards the recreation activity predicted and dictated ones area of residence. Most of the recreation facilities were in the urban areas where the population was also high. Those opposed to recreation were forced to migrate to the rural areas to relocate their customs from the others.

Despite the liberal attitude that the Pennsylvanians adopted with regard to amusement, some kept on protesting against these activities. The diverse opinions and manner of investment led to a distinct social economic class and manner of living for the people of the United States. This has widely grown to date with greater share and proportion of public attention on the recreation supporters.
